Drama Den

Real drama for real people

Daphne’s Biography

I have been passionate about drama for most of my life. From the age of nine I attended weekly drama lessons at the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama, where I obtained Guildhall and LAMDA qualifications in acting, speech and drama.

At fifteen I followed my passion for music and sang professionally on the jazz circuit around Yorkshire.

After obtaining my Equity card I moved to Richmond, Surrey, to study drama and performing arts full time. After three fantastic years, I received an honours diploma in acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

From then, I embarked on an acting career. My first professional acting job saw me touring the U.K with the Y. Touring Theatre Company, cast in the role of Cathy in the highly acclaimed Theatre in Education production and workshop ‘The Inner Circle’. This wonderful (and gruelling) 18 month tour culminated in performing at the Royal National Theatre, London.

I then went on to work with many other theatre companies including Impact Theatre Company and the Major Road Theatre Company. I also appeared in several productions at The Mary Wallace Theatre, The West Yorkshire Playhouse and again at the Royal National.

During this time my career also took me into the worlds of television, radio and film. Credits include:

Julie Heartbeat – Yorkshire TV

Rabia Jackson 999 – BBC

Mum So you think you’re a good driver? – BBC

Young Mum 999 – BBC

Helen Fit Piece – BBC Radio Bradford

Paula Caught – Leeds Film Festival

In 1997 I returned to Leeds. Armed with my qualifications, experience and rapidly expanding family, I embarked on my teaching career. For two years I taught drama and theatre practise at SCALA Theatre School. Soon Drama Den started to develop as a concept and soon I ran weekly sessions which proved to be very popular. Over the years Drama Den has been run at several locations around the North Leeds area and the hunt is always on to find new premises to bring Drama Den to as many young people as possible.

Despite this hectic schedule I was delighted when I was asked to run classes for the ITV Junior Television Workshop at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. I enjoyed this tremendously and was very sad when this fantastic group was shelved in the north of England due to budget cuts.

I’m really proud when I see my former pupils on the silver screen, prime time TV and the theatre. I’ve taught Matthew Lewis who plays Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies, Vinette Robinson who has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared on ‘Sherlock’ for the BBC, Rhea Bailey who has appeared in ‘The Bill’, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘Waterloo Road’ and Verity Rushworth who appeared in Emmerdale.

At the time of writing I am currently making plans to expand Drama Den into more locations throughout north Leeds whilst maintaining our current sessions in Harewood, Temple Newsam and Chapel Allerton.
